By Mark Jurgena Advocate Sports staff

As we turn the calendar to 2024, let’s review some memorable moments from Comets athletics in 2023.

January

After beating the Alton (Marquette) JV team and Litchfield to open the Litchfield Tourney the GHS boys basketball team was beaten by Troy (Triad) in the semifinals.

In the third-place game, they went wild going 18-for-28 from three-point range to break the 34-year-old school record and beat Taylorville 81-69.

Landen Moss hit seven three-pointers, Trent Bohannon had four, Kaleb Gardner had three and Hudson Alstat had two. Cale and Tyson Ackerman both hit a single three.

They also picked up SCC conference wins over Virden (North Mac) and Piasa (Southwestern) to move to 4-0 in loop action and added a win at Carlyle.

The girls had a big 41-25 win over Staunton when they outscored the Bulldogs 17-1 to end the game.

They also set records for threes in a game.

The Lady Comets won at Carlinville 65-45 and set the school record for threes in a game with 13. Abby Clark hit nine, Charlee Stearns had three and Lilly Funnemann had one. Clark’s total was also a school record as she piled up 30 points in the victory.

GHS also won at Centralia (Christ Our Rock Lutheran) 43-39 by forcing 27 turnovers. For more information see the December 29, 2023 edition of The Greenville Advocate.
