Recently the First Presbyterian Church in Sorento was recognized by the Illinois State Historical Society as a Sesquicentennial House of Worship.

The church was founded February 24, 1828, by Rev. Joel Knight and has observed 195 years this year. The congregation received a certificate from the ISHS which is on display in the church sanctuary.

This year’s crop of sesquicentennial meeting houses and their congregations come from all across the state. Anna to Waukegan, Galena to Centralia, and represent ten historic denominations: Baptist, Catholic, Community of Christ, Congregational, Methodist, African Methodist, Episcopal, Anglican/Episcopal, Presbyterian, Cumberland Presbyterian, Lutheran(ELCA), and Lutheran(LCMS).
