AMVETS Post 140 recently reached its 30th anniversary of remembering Bond County area deceased veterans through its Avenue of Flags program. The program began on Memorial Day weekend in 1993: flags were displayed on Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, Veterans Day, and Pearl Harbor day. After 9-11, they added that day as well. During those 30 years, bad weather stopped the display just twice, both times on Pearl Harbor Day.

The program was created to honor those who served and have since passed away. Any resident, most often family members, can purchase the 3 x 5 nylon flag, pole, bracket, strap, and storage tube. All memorial flags are flown over the United States Capitol building; each flag comes with a certificate verifying the date and the occasion for the purchaser to keep.
